AK Data Validation - Security Settings

The AK State Reporting Data Validation plugin allows PowerSchool administrators to control the types of validation rules that users have access to via Security Groups. Upon first, launch, the page sets permissions such that no users have access to page used to edit report rule security.

Granting Access to the Report Rule Security page

The first step to configuring security for the plugin is to grant at least one Security Group access to the page.
  1. Navigate to System Management -> Security -> Security Groups.

  2. Click the name of a Security Group that should have access to the page.

  3. Click the "Overridden Page Permissions" link on the "Page Level Permissions" line.

  4. Use the Filter box to find the correct page. Searching for "security" should be sufficient.
  5. Change the permission on the line that reads, "tech/gsdedservices/security.html" to Edit and submit the page.Image showing the filter being used and changing the permissions to Edit.

Turning on Security Permissions

Now that a user group has edit access to the page that controls plugin security, security can be turned on for different data types and privileges granted by security group. Access can be restricted to rules in the following categories: English Learner, Special Education, Discipline, and Economically Disadvantaged status.
  1. Navigate to the AK Data Validation plugin by going to Data and Reporting -> AK Data Validation.

  2. Click the "Edit Report Rule Security" button.
  3. By default, all user groups are allowed access to every rule category. In order to turn on security for a rule, click the "Edit ... Security" button in the appropriate column.
  4. A slide-out window will appear on the right side of the web browser. There are two steps to setting up security. If security is enabled, but no security groups are granted access, then no security groups will have access to those rules. This is an undesirable situation, because then no users will know those rules exist. It is recommended that your user who is responsible for turning in the completed report has access to all the data validation categories.
    1. Check the "Enable Security" box.
    2. Grant access to specific security groups.

  5. Scroll down and click the submit box, then repeat for any other categories where security restrictions are desired.

How Security Permissions Work

When the AK Data Validation page is loaded, a request is sent to the AK Data Validation server asking for the list of rules to run. This request contains information about the user and the server returns only the rules for which the user is allowed access. Once the user selects a report to validate, those rules are run, and there is no indication on the page that there are other rules that they do not have access to.
